Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed in the United States on the last Monday of May each year. It honors those who have lost their lives serving in the United States military. The holiday was originally known as Decoration Day and was officially recognized after General John Logan declared it an official day of remembrance for fallen soldiers in 1868. Since then, the day has become a tradition to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
