Celebrating Mother's Day 2023 By The Numbers

Celebrating Mother's Day 2023 By The NumbersMother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May every year, is one of the most popular holidays in the U.S. The National Retail Federation (NRF) has conducted its annual Mother's Day survey since 2003 to estimate consumer spending and the most popular trends for "moms" special day.

Americans plan to spend $35.7 billion on Mother's Day.

That figure is nearly $4 billion more than last year's record high of $31.7 billion, according to the annual survey released by the NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics. Eighty-four percent of U.S. adults are expected to celebrate the holiday this year.

Individual spending will also break records this year.

Consumers plan to spend $274.02 per person, the highest number in the history of the survey and up from the previous record high of $245.76 in 2022. The top consumers are those aged 35-44, who are expected to spend an average of $382.26 on Mother's Day.

The most popular gifts for mom.

As seen in previous years, the most popular Mother's Day gifts are flowers (74%), greeting cards (74%), and special experiences such as brunch or dinner (60%). Consumers will also spend a total of $7.8 billion on jewelry, $5.6 billion on dining out, and $4 billion on electronics. Respondents to the survey said the most important factors in purchasing a Mother's Day gift include finding items that are unique or different (47%) or those that create a special memory (42%).

Flowers

For florists, Mother's Day is the third most popular holiday of the year, according to the Society of American Florists. The springtime holiday follows Valentine's Day and Christmas/Hanukkah when it comes to sales volume. Approximately one-quarter of all the flowers purchased throughout the year are bought for Mother's Day.

Dining Out

The National Restaurant Association calls Mother's Day the "Mother of All Holidays," and there's a good reason why. Among adults planning to visit a restaurant for Mother's Day this year, 94% say letting restaurants do the cooking is easy and reduces their stress. Few holidays can deliver the sheer number of customers hoping to treat Moms to a great meal and gracious service—often with the whole family in tow.

Greeting cards

Mother's Day is the third most popular holiday when it comes to card sales, according to the Greeting Card Association. Americans purchase an incredible 113 million cards for the holiday every year. Flowers and a card for mom are standard gifts, so it makes sense that Mother's Day ranks behind only Christmas cards (1.3 billion) and Valentine's Day cards (145 million) when it comes to total greeting card sales.
