#GivingTuesday : A Global Day Of GivingAfter a marathon of shopping from Black Friday to Small Business Saturday and on through Cyber Monday, are you ready to change your focus from buying to giving?

#GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: dedicate one day to encourage people around the world to do good. Over the past seven years, the idea has taken off, inspiring hundreds of millions of people to donate their time and money to causes they care about.

In all, over a billion dollars has been raised through online charitable giving worldwide.

Social media has been a catalyst in building interest for #GivingTuesday. New research from the YMCA finds that more than 62% of Americans 18-38 support at least one cause per month—asked where they learned about those causes, 48.5% of all respondents said social media. Of the respondents aged 18-22, 58.4% said social media.

Asha Curran, CEO of #GivingTuesday, is encouraged by these results. "While Millennials are often counted out of philanthropic efforts because of lower financial contributions compared to older generations, they are, in fact, most likely to engage in #GivingTuesday.”

With so many charities competing for your dollars, experts say it's essential to give wisely. The Better Business Bureau urges donors to research charities to ensure their contributions are going to trustworthy organizations. Their Wise Giving Guide offers helpful information that is relevant throughout the year. The nonprofit organization, Charity Navigator, also has a wealth of free tools and resources to help you make informed decisions about charitable giving.
