How Technology Changed The Restaurant Industry

How Technology Changed The Restaurant IndustryInvestments in technology helped restaurants fuel sales in 2022, despite inflation, staff shortages, and inventory delays. A survey by TD Bank has found that restaurants making significant technological investments were able to keep sales growing.

Of the 250 restaurant owners participating in the survey, 72% said they invested in contactless ordering (mobile/online ordering), payment, pickup, and new delivery services to boost revenue.

Mobile ordering and delivery are now part of everyday life and are no longer nice to have but are expected. Restaurant owners must continue to enhance these offerings to keep up with the competition.

Restaurant owners noted that their top investment plans include mobile ordering (54%), delivery services (47%), technology such as new POS systems, self-service kiosks, digital signage (45%), and alternative payment methods (37%).

Along with these investments in technology, restaurant owners say they also plan to make changes to their physical locations to cater to pickup and delivery.

  • 55% plan to add more space for pickup
  • 45% plan to provide additional drive-through areas
  • 43% plan to add an outdoor deck or patio for increased dining space

Despite the restaurant industry's challenges, 81% responding to the survey feel optimistic about the future. This optimism and the planned investments lead to the need for capital. 61% of respondents plan to apply for funding within the year.
