Here are a few interesting facts about Memorial Day to help you understand a little more about the holiday: Memorial Day originally only celebrated those who died in the civil war. This practice continued until World War 1. Confederate and Union soldiers were both honored on Memorial Day despite the resolution of the war. It is believed the holiday originated in Charleston, SC. However, 25 cities claim that it originated there. 7 billion hotdogs are expected to be consumed between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Memorial Day was officially made into a holiday in 1971. 3 pm is the official time of remembrance on the last Monday in May each year. 1.7 billion dollars worth of meat will be consumed on memorial day weekend. Almost 40 million Americans plan to travel during the holiday weekend. 95% of companies close their offices on the holiday.
