Organizing Your Small Business For 2019

Organizing Your Small Business For 2019The importance of organization in small business is summed up wonderfully by Christina Scalise, “Organization isn't about perfection; it's about efficiency, reducing stress and clutter, saving time and money and improving your overall quality of life.”  Getting organized can take on several different meanings.

Spring Cleaning

Although it’s technically winter, the new year is a great time to declutter your office space and spruce up the interior of your business.  Taking the time to organize paper files and throw away unnecessary items can lower stress levels and help you to be more efficient with your time.  Sprucing up your interior can be as simple as throwing on a new coat of paint and replacing damaged furniture or flooring.  This will give your business a fresh look and make it more appealing to customers.

Go Paperless

Many businesses have already transitioned to a paperless business model and following suit can save you money and keep you better organized.  With electronic receipts now being admissible by the IRS, the need for paper has disappeared.  While it may not be feasible to completely do away with paper, taking steps to cut down can help you to organize several aspects of your business and lead you down a path of going green.

Clean Up Your Inbox

Email is a great tool but can turn into a time waster really quickly.  Take some time to clear out your inbox and unsubscribe from spam email senders.  Create subfolders to better organize the items you need to keep.  Develop a schedule of when you check your email so that it does not consume your day and interrupt other tasks.  Start using the calendar in your email to keep track of upcoming meetings and events.  All of this will make your administrative duties easier and more efficient.

Update Your Social Profiles

Social media profiles should be periodically audited and updated to reflect any changes in format or in your business messaging.  Make sure your profiles are complete and optimized to draw in customers.  Take a look at your posting frequency, your engagement statistics and following to identify areas of opportunity.  Social media is a great promotional tool for small businesses and should be kept active.

Purchase Accounting/Inventory Software

Accounting and inventory software can help you track and audit your finances more efficiently, cut down on costly mistakes and identify opportunities for growth.  While it is important to have employees in place to manage these aspects of your business, giving them the tools to be successful is just as important.  Accurate financial statements are at the core of successful small businesses.
